I’m working in a digitising project at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Vienna. We have a set of photomechanical prints of architectural photos from northern India, all measuring approximately 20 by 25 cm and inscribed “M.L. Shugan Chand, Delhi” or “Shugan Chand & Co. Agra”. There is very little online information available about this photographer. Apparently some of his photos were published by Tuck & Sons as postcards. A database search for the name brings up 23 cards.
Does anyone among you have any information on him? Is there a possibility to determine the date of publication for the cards in the database? Thanks in advance!
Sorry I don’t have an info on that artist, if you found a card, the closest date we have is “First Use” which is the first postal usage of the card. If the card has a packet, then the packet might have have a date as well.
What are the cards you found, I couldn’t find anything.
Many thanks for your reply! I apologize for the delay in getting back to you; I had a very busy time. This is what my search gave me:
But I didn’t see any date info. By the way, in the 12 cards set from Delhi in monochrome there is a typo in the comment transcription (“Italian” art museum instead of Indian).
Hi Justin,
It seems impossible to me to read the date based on the scan. Note that ours are not postcards but bigger prints all sized approximately 20 by 25 cm on rather thin papers. Apparently Mr. Shugan Chand also ran an “Indian Art Museum” as mentioned on the verso of several postcards. Perhaps these prints were on sale there.
Thanks again,
Wolfgang
